When lifting a vehicle, the Constant Velocity (CV) joints are put on an increased angle, helping to accelerate the wear on the joint and putting additional stress on the CV boots. The added down travel from adding extended shocks can also cause the joint to exceed the maximum operating angle, which causes the CV joints to bind up and cease to operate.
